Washington DC Area Youth Groups - CU Resources #23

Christ Centered Young People
Mount Airy Baptist Church
1100 North Capitol Street NW, Washington, DC 20002
(202) 789-0640

First Friday of each month. The activities for youth in grades seven though twelve are designed to encourage an inquiry into Christian identity, an openness to deal with diversity, sharpening of academic and intellectual skills; to help youth explore their feelings and concerns about significant social issues; and encourage them to use their individual talents in programs and ministries that interest them in order to nurture their growth as people of faith while providing volunteer services to the community.

Community Club
New York Avenue Presbyterian Church
1313 New York Avenue NW Washington, DC 20005
(202) 393-3700
Every Thursday night at 6:45 p.m., Peter Marshall Hall comes alive with the energy of some 100 7th-12th grade students and their mentors (tutors), working on homework, longer-term school projects, and college applications Consistent meeting week after week allows for a trusting relationship to grow. Additionally, doing homework in a room full of other teenagers who are also working hard provides positive peer pressure that may not exist in their neighborhood environments. At 8:00 p.m. work stops, and the assembled group hears Club announcements, including the latest scholarship and college acceptance letters. As the younger students thunderously applaud the fruits of the seniors’ hard work, their own desires for academic success are nurtured.

The Youth Group meets about once a month, usually at the church, but occasionally at the leader's houses for the chance to hang out in a Christian setting. We talk about issues that are pressing for the kids as they travel through life. We also plan several fun activities for each season. Past outings have included camping on the Eastern Shore, Lazer Tag and bowling and plenty of overnighters. You'll have to come to one of the Youth Group's overnight events at the church to really understand Grog, but let's just say it's probably one of the best games ever made for a dark church. Please call for details!

Thursday Nights Live! is the primary summer program of the DCCRC. Part family night, and part community outreach, the congregation and community come together for six weeks of fun in getting to know eachother, and rejuvenating our Christian faith. Every Thursday evening for six weeks, we start by eating a free meal together, prepared by volunteers. After the meal we disperse for singing, crafts, outdoor games and adult group discussions. The amount of energy and laughter in our building on a weekly basis make us all eager for the next year's program to come rolling around.

ChristUnite.com, a website connecting people to ministries that help to strengthen a relationship with Christ, is shutting down in February 2011. The site’s owner has allowed others to distribute its very helpful information, including the DC area’s regional page. CU's information is not comprehensive, but it is substantial. The DC regional page is posted, with minor changes, on TCDC in this series.
